THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM writing to say congratulations to the Passport Office, the relevant Ministry and the Security Company contracted by them. There was courtesy every step of the way. This time I did not have to prove to the guard that my son, who is not in a wheelchair, is disabled. He was informed about the policies of the agency and he knew where to send me. The female guard I encountered next accepted that my son would not sit and wait so she assured me that she would signal them to come in once it was his turn.
There was sensitivity, not to be confused with pity. I waited and saw a receptionist, the young lady who received our papers accepted that my son would not be comfortable standing to be measured and waited patiently while I manoeuvred him into position.
The entire process took a total of 16 minutes, 16 minutes from the time I parked my car to the time I returned to my car, buckled my son's seat belt and headed back to school with him.
For those of us in the disabled community each day we face the handicaps which society places before us. Thanks to those who made an effort to remove this one, for the others; we do not need legislation to begin the process of including and increasing access for persons with disabilities.
I am, etc.,
