published: Thursday | January 15, 2004

THE QUARTER-FINALS of the ISSA/KFC schoolboy basketball competition tips off today as the top teams vie to eliminate each other for a spot in the championship round.

Calabar and Ardenne face off at the Stadium courts at 4:00 p.m. with Tivoli facing Calabar's junior team in the curtainraiser at 2:30 p.m.

Calabar have been in fine form all season and have a perfect 6-0 record in the first round including a dramatic 80-77 come-from-behind win against reigning Southern Conference champs, Jamaica College, last November. Led by Kemar McLeash and Travis Thomas, Calabar will be up against the Bassil Barrett coached team, which is known for its sound execution.

Reigning Central Conference Under-19 champs Manchester High begin their repeat campaign against Edwin Allen High at home. Old Harbour High host Holmwood Technical High, Bustamante High travel to St. Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Munro College play Glenmuir High at home. All matches begin at 3:00 p.m.

In Under-16 action, Old Harbour High and Belair High battle at Old Harbour at 1:00 p.m.

In the Northern Conference, Charlemont High's senior team faces Ferncourt High and the junior team plays Ocho Rios High at the Buckfield court on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. respectively.

The Montego Bay Cricket Club will be the venue for the West Conference semi-final showdowns between Under-16 teams Merlene Ottey High and Maldon High at 1:00 p.m. followed by Muschette High and Cornwall College at 2:00 p.m.

Muschette High and Merlene Ottey High (4:00 p.m.) and Cornwall College and Maldon High (6:00 p.m.) will compete in the senior group.
