Uncertain future
published: Monday | January 19, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

AS WE approach the start of the Presidential election season here in the United States, we who boastfully call ourselves "Americans" have obviously still not learned the lessons of 9-11-2001.

We've spent billions of dollars improving our security, fighting wars overseas, and at the same time trying to convince ourselves that we had no responsibility for the disaster of the Twin Towers. Yet, it was our money that funded those enemies, our economic self-centeredness that exploited their lands and resources, and it was our national arrogance that spoiled and desecrated their cultures and religious beliefs.

Today, having passed huge debts on to our children and grandchildren, we are far poorer. Having invaded and destroyed two foreign nations, threatened several others, we are feared and hated by even more people. Finally, having divided our nation, economically, politically, and culturally, we face a far more uncertain future.

In short, we've done it all wrong, we're never going to admit it, and what we've done has only set us farther behind. We need your prayers today, more than ever. Please forgive us.

I am, etc.,

ED McCOY
