Water crisis in the Chapelton Division
published: Monday | January 19, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The severe water crisis in many districts in the Chapelton Division N. C. Clarendon is alarming. Districts such as Pennants, Woodhall, Mt. Providence, Beckford Kraal, Blackwoods, Iron Gate, Summerfield, Danks, Cottage Hills, Main Ridge, naming a few of these districts, are constantly without water, and some residents only see water when it rains.

Although NWC pipes go through some districts water does not go through these pipes, only air.

NWC slogan says 'Water is Life' but the dirty gully water that the residents of Iron Gate and other communities are forced to use mean sure death if they continue to use it.

Sir, the NWC does not respond to the call for help seriously. They need to take responsibility to supply water to these communities, after all these people are taxpayers too and deserve better.

The vast amount of leaking and burst pipes cause water to run to waste all over the division; if these pipes were repaired and the water controlled, more people would get water.

If a fire should occur in any of the districts day or night we would have to depend on the rapid response of the little tractors carrying two blue drums, which one sees often delivering water to those who can pay on a day to day basis.

Recently, the Chapelton Meat Market was closed because there was no water in the town. The police station and the community hospital have to depend on the water truck to deliver water or they go with out water for days. It's a shame because the area is not short of water. God help us.

I am, etc.,

FLORETTE STEWART JP

Councillor Chapelton Division

Chapelton P.O. Box 27

Clarendon
