Unbearable conditions in Anotto Bay
published: Wednesday | January 21, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WRITE to bring to the attention of the relevant authorities the state of the road leading off the main road in Annotto Bay to the Gibraltar/Grays Inn Housing Scheme.

For several years now the state of the roadways in the scheme has been deplorable. Each time the residents complain and threaten to take action, remedial work such as filling the potholes with river shingle is effected. However, as the rains come the river shingle is washed away and the potholes grow into large craters.

As a result, the residents are experiencing severe difficulties in getting to and from their homes. For the past three weeks this section of St. Mary has been experiencing heavy rainfall which make a bad situation worse. To add insult to injury, the taxi operators refuse to take residents to their homes, as they are fearful to drive over the large craters in the road. Hence, residents are left to walk the rest of their journey home. Some persons are reluctant to attend churches, especially at nights, as they have to walk the journey home and it is at great risk as there is hardly anywhere they can place their feet.

The situation is extremely bad, motor vehicle owners have to park their vehicles in the town and walk home, as the cost to replace spare parts on a regular basis is expensive.

I was told that the Member of Parliament, Mr. Harry Douglas and personnel from the National Works Agency toured sections of the scheme recently. Since then nothing has happened, although it has rained everyday since.

In view of the above situation, the residents are appealing to the relevant authorities to immediately reconstruct the roadway, as the heavy rains we are experiencing in the parish make a bad situation worse. The condition is unbearable.

I am, etc.,

NATASHA WILLIAMS
