THE EDITOR, Sir:
I HAVE been hearing too many stories about dishonest Jamaican lawyers. I recently met an elderly man who engaged a lawyer, recommended by the Jamaica Bar Association, and was scammed out of his money. For years, he has been trying to get it back. This poor man is in his golden years and ill. And the wicked lawyer is a well-known church-going, Bible-thumping man.
My message to Jamaican lawyers is: All the wealth in the world cannot bring back your good name once it's lost. Why do you do something today that you may regret tomorrow? Why do something that may tarnish your family name and hurt your relatives?
To the Parliament of Jamaica: I urge to you to come up with a system so that innocent people, often in their weakened years, do not have to continue to put their money into the hands of the rapacious lawyers of Jamaica. It takes a long time and energy for people to try to get back their money. These wicked lawyers often prey on widows and widowers, many of whom suffer real financial hardship in their old age.
In the name of God, do something - a country's civility is measured by the way it protects its weaker members: the old, the poor, the sick, the disabled. PLEASE!
I am, etc.,
