Sales, sales, and more sales
published: Wednesday | January 21, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I BELIEVE the consumers of this country must have been very happy that almost every store had a sale during the Christmas season. I say this because the word 'sale' was posted on the walls, windows, doors or were hanging from the ceiling of almost every store. I wonder if the price on the items were actually reduced or the word 'sale' was there to attract us, the customers. For the customers who are not aware or alert as I am, let me take you through the months of the year when a sale is likely to appear on the walls or windows of the companies/stores.

Now that the year has begun one can look out for the 'New Year's sale' and at the end of the month of January, there is the 'After stock-taking sale'. We move to the month of February which signals the 'Valentine sale', a time when everything goes up (I mean down) in red. March follows and so does 'Ash Wednesday sale'.

The month of April carries two sales 'Easter sale' and 'Carnival sale'. Of course, the latter should keep us whining through the month, which takes up to the month of May for the "Labour Day sale'. So we are in the month of June, where there is no holiday. However, our smart merchants/storeowners will create a sale to attract us. Here comes the 'Red tag sale'. Only items with the red tag on them are on sale. In other words, a sale on selected items only. Look carefully! And let's not forget that the 'Summer sale' starts here. Continuing the month of July follows; a month without a holiday, but if a company/store was closed temporarily because of refurbishing then this will lead to the 'Grand re-opening sale' wow!

Mr. Editor, eight months down the road we find the month of August. This month carries the 'Emancipation sale' and the 'Independence sale', chose one.

September follows and with no holiday, you can look for the 'Customer appreciation day sale'. While in October there is the 'Heroes Day sale' a holiday sale.

Our journey takes us to the eleventh month November a month that has no holiday sale, and if the store owner is experiencing financial problems or if the company/store is no longer viable then we as customers can look for the 'Closing down sale'. What a way to go!

Finally, it's December and the 'Christmas sale' is upon us. Here we see items never seen before and prices never seen before.

I am, etc.,
