U-Drive assists Negril police
published: Thursday | January 22, 2004

WESTERN BUREAU:

THE CRIME fighting capabilities of the Negril police got a boost earlier this month when the Jamaica U-Drive Association, which represents the island's major car-rental agencies, offered the services of two motor vehicles to improve their mobility. In making the presentation, Barry Jenoure, an executive member of the U-Drive Association, said the offer was the association's way of helping the police to enhance their effectiveness in the Negril area. He went on to explain that a total of four motor vehicles, one each from Hertz, Island, Budget and Bargain rental agencies, were being donated by U-Drive Association members but would be rotated in pairs at two-week intervals.

The gesture has won the approval of Industry and Tourism Minister Aloun Ndombet-Asamba, who in expressing her appreciation to the U-Drive association, said their effort to support the security forces was an excellent example for other corporate citizens in the resort town, which recently benefited from the addition of 30 new police graduates, who have been posted at the Negril station.

"I want to encourage all the businesses and people of Negril to come together to protect the hospitality industry in their area by assisting the police and forming Tourism Neighbourhood Watches," said Minister Assamba, who intimated that she would like to see other resort areas duplicating the Negril initiative.
