THE EDITOR, Sir:
READING THE Gleaner is never the same without spending time to examine Las May's cartoons - simply, works of fine art.
It is quite interesting to see detailed and substantive issues captured and represented masterfully in art form. Art is universal and indeed where the common man may encounter difficulties in perusing the many pages of a journal, a simple picture explains to him more than a thousand words.
Individuals, cornered in a tense societal structure like Jamaica's, can only but welcome any element of daily humour - a striking characteristic feature of Las May's cartoons.
Really, if we were to take to heart the heinous occurrences in our tiny island we are sure to make little progress but Las May indirectly helps us to see that behind every serious issue is found an element of laughter.
Life is really too short to focus on the negative face value of daily happenings. Let us continue to probe beneath them to garner important and thought-provoking lessons or morals for this is one area where the crux of our progress lies - in our learning from our mistakes and moving forward determined not to make repetitive and gargantuan blunders.
We long for a resurgence of art-form in all levels of our school system, recognising that we have a powerful tool in our hands.
One can only say well done, Las May, and hats off to The Gleaner for allowing such a daily expression of fine art.
I am, etc.,
SIR LATS
