Peace talks in West Kingston
published: Monday | January 26, 2004

A GROUP of community strongmen, affiliated with rival gangs in West Kingston, met last Thursday afternoon in a high level meeting to discuss ways to keep the peace between Wilton Gardens (Rema), Denham Town and Tivoli Gardens.

The discussion was centred around the recent shooting of four persons in Wilton Gardens (Rema) early Thursday morning. Police reports said the bodies of two of the men, Richard Wilson and Ricardo Dale, were later dumped behind a service station at Heroes Circle, Kingston, while the other two who escaped, have since been hospitalised.

Reports are that men from Denham Town and Wilton Gardens sat and talked with each other in the presence of the police. They gave their assurance that the peace will be sustained.

MEETING

Speaking with The Gleaner on Friday Deputy Commis-sioner Lucius Thomas, said he had heard about reports of the meeting, but was unable to say who met and what was discussed.

"We are continuing to strategically place police in the area," said DCP Thomas.

Residents who spoke with The Gleaner Friday said police patrols had flooded the streets of the community since the incident. The Gleaner has since learned that the recent shooting resulted from a dispute between members of a dancing group, who were accused of disrespecting a woman from Den-ham Town.

In retaliation, men from Denham Town attempted to enter into Wilton Gardens to avenge 'the disrespect' meted out to the woman. They were prevented from entering the community by men from Wilton Gardens. Guns were brandished and a gunfight ensued.
