Who will help Miss Walker?
published: Tuesday | January 27, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IF THE report on the front page of The Gleaner of January 23, concerning Miss Carol Walker is correct, then God help us here in Jamaica. Isn't it obvious that this woman was placed in the wrong institution over 12 years ago and left to languish? Was it obvious then that she could have been mentally ill?

Your report states that on the previous day (the 22nd) she 'just missed being placed behind bars due to her boisterous behaviour in the Black River Courthouse'. Does this mean that for the 12 years that she was behind bars she was only treated as a criminal and not as an ill person?

My question is, 'Now, who will help Miss Walker and perhaps others like herself in Jamaica in this year A.D. 2004?'

I am, etc.,

ELSIE SAYLE
