A change of reality needed
published: Tuesday | January 27, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

'A NUH disrespect, a reality'. This was the conclusion of a 'conscientious' young man after having a heated debate with myself and other peers. I think Vybz Kartel is indeed an entertainer to watch; his smooth, melodious prowess and his ability to 'ride' any rhythm (with a little change of attitude and a touch of professionalism) will definitely give him the fame he so craves.

However, I cannot say I am all smiles with one of his latest efforts, which from observation, is getting a lot of attention. For some, it is a hit 'big tune', while for others it is quite appalling, to say the least, and is quintessential of the belief that women are nothing more than sex objects and a fetish to their male counterparts.

What may have led Mr. Kartel to write those lyrics is the approach some women take to their relationships. Respect, trust and loyalty are second degree; more important are the material things that can be attained from your partner. Therefore, the women 'tek...' while the men 'let off di money' and everyone is happy.

We really need to change this 'reality' but it may very well have to begin with us; yes us women.

I am, etc.,

ANN-MARIE PATRICK
