THE SPANISH Town Hospital in the midst of the warring communities of the Old Capital, is asking for donations of medical supplies from the public to help it deal with the rising casualties of the bloody street battles between the warring gangs.
"The situation is very stressful for the staff, the wards are overcrowded, the town is tense, and people are fearful for their lives," said Pauline Reid, chief executive officer of the medical facility.
"We are short of beds, short of stretchers, and we need medical supplies and we would welcome donations of sutures and gloves because of the severe cut in the budget," she added.
HEAVY WORKLOAD
She disclosed that: "We have a very heavy workload, and the cadre of staff is not enough to handle the workload. A number of the injuries are very serious, and we have to transfer some of the cases we are not equipped to handle to UHWI (University Hospital of the West Indies) or KPH (Kingston Public Hospital)."
