We must care for our young
published: Thursday | January 29, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I READ about the untimely death of little Shakara Harris and I grieve for her family. Again another precious life has been snuffed out and the powers that be are falling over themselves to avoid blame.

I lived just off Gore Terrace for some time and it was treacherous at best to cross, even when the crossing was there. Many motorists who got their licence through the very efficient back door, do not even know what the crossing is for.

Most civilised countries take special care of their young. We cannot afford an extensive school bus system for the children but at least in our planning we could give a little more consideration to them.

Once upon a time, civilised Jamaicans understood the idea that authority came with responsibility. Now with the crass new breed, authority comes with arrogance and conceit.

I am, etc.,
