Traffic police
published: Thursday | January 29, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE POLICE are at times ruthless in the issuing of traffic tickets, which at times are not warranted. A simple warning can at times do, especially when there are no signs to alert people that the road is a one-way and other minor offences that cost us $5,000 and more at a time.

With all the crime and violence, especially in the Spanish Town area, it is high time that a new stance as to the recruitment and selection of police officers is taken. No longer should we employ persons who will only take instructions and who will not try to upgrade their level of knowledge, skill and analysis in the chosen career path. It seems that more often than not if the police do not catch the criminal with the guns in their hands then the case will not be solved.

The Minister of Security and Justice is seeking to recruit more persons into the police force but this will not at the end of the day be enough. There needs to be identification of police personnel who wish to go on courses that will help in the more technical part of solving crimes, who can analyse crime scenes and use evidence to solve crimes. We need a more technically able and educated police force if we are to move forward and curb crime.

I am etc.,

ASHIEK LEWIN
