All about war
published: Friday | January 30, 2004

THE EDITOR, SIR:

IT SEEMS that the 21st century is all about war, as the mighty nations wage war on air, land and sea, and maybe soon in space. As the leaders of the US and the UK hide behind technicalities about the pretext of war we see the machinations at work. Unfortunately the world is caught up in a bind and we are very short of peacemakers.

Here in Jamaica warlords battle for turf, now it is in Spanish Town but one can easily see this situation developing in every major town in the future if we do not make and implement plans to deal with the underlying causes. This country needs several peace management initiatives as well as reforms in the politics, the society, the economy and the psychology. This is inextricably bound with the need for transformational leadership capable of making the major changes required to save this country from a kind of collective suicide.

Thank god for Dr Raymoth Notice who has been like a prophet in the wilderness in Spanish Town. Why is it impossible for the stakeholders to develop and implement a plan for the town? Garbage and disorder, murder and extortion seem to be rife in the town. Do we expect the police to sort out the problems which extend way beyond law enforcement?

This is a strange country; roadblocks are mounted for every possible thing. Had the police killed one person under dubious circumstances the human rights lobbyists and community activists would be screaming over the airwaves and television. In this case there is a deafening silence. How many have to suffer and how many have to die. Don't ask me why? (Marley's words not mine). We do not want one order we need a new order.

I am, etc.,
