'Shakara's Law'
published: Friday | January 30, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

SHAKARA'S DEATH has brought much pain and sorrow to many. Let us not leave it there. Let her name be remembered for the good that can come from this tragedy.

Shakara's tragedy can be the wind that blows the dust from the eyes of the necessary authorities and render them to be more caring and responsible towards the children of this society.

There are many pedestrian crossings in need of repainting. There are also many who are without jobs. Give them a paint brush and some paint. It will save the lives of many, not only children, but people in general. Although funds are scarce, just a few more dollars to ensure the safety of a child should be a priority. Employ more of those traffic wardens who, with their sign in hand, assist the children in crossing.

We should all venture on this mission by ensuring that the relevant authorities do not forget that we are watching, people power must prevail. Letters to the newspapers, calls to the talk shows and constant calls to the necessary authorities will assist in fulfilling their job descriptions, or as a part thereof.

Shakara's law should prevail. After all, her death should be justified.

In closing, parents and teachers and the communities on a whole, should also remember that we all have our part to play. It is important that children be taught the importance of using the pedestrian crossings. Not two or three feet away from, but directly on. I say this out of my daily experiences with children and pedestrian crossings.

Let us all help to make Shakara's tragedy not be in vain.

I am, etc.,
