Mr. Getfield, who has formally retired from duties at the company, was recognised for his contributions at the celebration. Friends, co-workers and managers who spoke at the service gave rave reviews of his work.
Long-time friend A.J. Nicholson, Attorney-General, who offered a tribute at the service, described Mr. Getfield as a good person.
"He is a person of passion and compassion," he said.
He also told the story of how their friendship was established and strenghtened by Mr. Getfield's concerned spirit.
Mr. Getfield was also recognised as a good employee by Oliver Clarke, managing director and chairman of The Gleaner Company. Mr. Clarke said his many years of service were meaningful and worthy of recognition.
Circulation Manager Norman Marshall, who chaired the programme, in one phrase summed up Mr. Getfield's contributions.
"He has left his name at The Gleaner and in history," he said.
A dedicated church man, Mr. Getfield intends to continue playing a serious role in church activities, especially since he has retired. He also intends to offer his assistance to the company where necessary.
"Wherever the need arises, I will help out," he said.
Mr. Getfield's history with the company began in 1973 when he was employed as a supervisor in the circulation department. His efficiency and quality work were recognised and he was later promoted to assistant circulation manager.
During his tenure with the company, he received five long-service awards.
In his response, which was dotted with clever jokes and funny experiences, he expressed his pleasure at working with the company which he said taught him a lot.
He described the job as 'exciting' and one that also helped him to build initiative and decision making character. He was also able to meet people at all levels through the interaction the job demanded.
He was also grateful to his family for their support, and his manager and deputy manager for their roles in helping the department to run smoothly and making his job interesting.
