Beckford, Clarke and Wignall secure victories
published: Friday | January 30, 2004

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP silver medallist James Beckford was among three Jamaicans who secured victories at yesterday's TEAG Indoor Meet in Eurfurt, Germany.

Beckford, the 2004 Sportsman of the Year, leapt 7.93 metres to capture the men's long jump ahead of the German pair of Nils Winter (7.85m) and Christian Kaczmarek (7.40m).

Davian Clarke and Maurice Wignall were the other Jamaican winners.

Clarke, considered one of the best 400m anchor leg runner in the world, took the men's 400m in 46.32. The former 400m national champion crossed the line ahead of Germans Sebastian Gatzka (47.12) and California Molefe (47.24).

Meanwhile, Wignall came away the winner in the 60m hurdles. The Commonwealth Games bronze medallist stopped the clock at 7.56 seconds to defeat Cuban Yunier Hernandez (7.57) by a nose and the United State's Duane Ross (7.60).

Also on the medal podium were Pete-Gaye Dowdie and Lacena Golding-Clarke.

Golding-Clarke, the wife of Davian, finished second in the 60m hurdles, this despite recording the fastest time (7.99) in the heats. She returned to run 8.03 seconds in the final, which was won by Juliane Sprenger of the host country in 8.01.

In the same event, Dionne Rose-Henley finished seventh in 8.27, this after taking second in heat two in 8.20.

Former national 100m champion Peta-Gaye Dowdie was beaten into third place in the women's 60m. Dowdie, who stepped up one notch from her position last year (7.42) finished third yesterday in 7.41 behind Austria's Karin Mayr (7.22) and Gabi Rockmeier of Germany (7.39).
