Wolmer's, JC begin fight for crown
published: Friday | January 30, 2004

WOLMER'S BOYS and Jamaica College (JC) relive last year's Southern Conference final of the ISSA/KFC Under-19 Schoolboy Basketball competition when the first game of their best-of-three final tips off at JC today at 3:00 p.m.

JC may be entering the series more confident than their opponents as they swept Wolmer's in two games last year. JC's point guard, Rohan Cruise, and forward Omar Bar-nes are coming off blistering performances against Calabar, whom they defeated in the semi-finals. Barnes hauled down an unmatched 35 rebounds and scored 29 points and Cruise top scored with 30 points.

Barnes' and Cruise's points represented 77 per cent of JC's total points in their semi-final win but the Jason James-coached team has to be more balanced against Wolmer's.

In their semi-final game against St. Andrew Technical High on Wednesday, Wolmer's were stripped down to their core and in the process showed what they were made of by overcoming a 17-point third quarter deficit to win by three points.

Guard Thane McKenzie and swingman Andre Hewitt have been leading Wolmer's through the season and their coach, Howard 'Chicken' Harvey, said his team will continue to do what it has been doing all season.

"I think JC is a very good team and I really respect the players there and we're not going to take anything from them. We are just going to go in with our game plan and try and do our best, and with the Lord guiding us we will be victorious," Harvey said.

Game two of the best-of-three series will be played next Tuesday at Mico Teachers College, Wolmer's home court, and if necessary, game three at the Stadium courts on Thursday. All games begin at 3:00 p.m.
