THE EDITOR, Sir:
FEBRUARY IS celebrated as Black History Month. It's the month that we take time out to appreciate how far we have journeyed. We celebrate our successes, become open to learn from our failures and prepare to venture into our future with hope. The quote, "Up You Mighty Race," speaks not to a single race, but to what the great of the past lived for in trying to liberate a people. The struggle was not just for the Negro race, it was also for any other race, class or creed. The call from The Rt. Excellent Marcus Garvey seeks not to categorize persons but to bring them to a level of consciousness as to the role they have played, are playing or willing to play in order that humankind can indeed live in peace and harmony.
Our forefathers fought for the same. It is for us, therefore, not to take the struggles of the past lightly or, worse, for granted. As the freedom that we now enjoy, though limited it may seem to some, was paid for with the blood of many who trod the path before us.
A lot has been accomplished and we have come a long way, but it would be naive for us to think that it has all ended and there is nothing left to fight for. "Up you mighty race," is a call for us not to remain in our comfort zones simply because we have attained some level of freedom. Rather, a call for us to move to the next level.
A mighty race is one that shows love and care for humankind. Are you part of a mighty race? Will you join the struggle? Are you willing to identify the footprints of those who went before and gave unselfishly of themselves? As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, will you seek to play your part in advancing the welfare of the whole human race? Sacrifices will have to be made now as they were made then.
I am, etc.,
