THE EDITOR, Sir:
When Singaporean grandmothers tell their grandchildren of Lee Kuan Yew, the father of modern Singapore, they will do so with a feeling of immense pride. When Jamaican grandmothers tell their children about post-colonial and independent Jamaica what will they say?
Perkins is often accused of making negative comments about happenings in Jamaica. But I believe his comments should not be considered destructive. As I understand him, Perkins longs for the day when from among Jamaica's political elite there will emerge a leader or leaders able to duplicate or even surpass the achievements of modern Singapore. Perkins dreams of a society where genuine opportunities exist with equity, and where justice, decency and fairplay are the hallmarks of the social system. Is this negativism?
Perkins would be happy with a news story headline that says:
'Jamaica - The success story of the Caribbean'.
We all need to wake up and join the 'Asian tigers'. We can do it.
