Too many suffer
published: Monday | February 9, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I FOUND it amazing that The Minister of Labour, Hon. Horace Dalley could have come up with the idea of banning individuals from Penlyne Castle and Rock River from participating in future farm work programmes because one or two of their numbers have been allegedly caught trying to smuggle drugs. How can this be? Certainly, these individuals were not emissaries of these communities. They were going about their private business, with many in their hometown never knowing they were even gone. They were only made aware after the news media reported their arrest.

Furthermore, these humble country folk who have worked so hard over the years and have been given a chance to earn a little extra should not have been exposed to those corrupting influences in Kingston who gave them the drugs. Yes, they are not fools and must take some of the responsibility for their actions. However, I would not be surprised if these guys were genuinely tricked. It has happened before. Regardless of the circumstances, innocent 'districians' cannot be held responsible. That is absurd.

I am, etc.,
