Why are the police impotent?
published: Monday | February 9, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I CONTINUE to be horrified with the daily accounts of the so-called 'dons' that have now taken over as the 'governing body' in Spanish Town. I am angry and outraged that the Government stands idly by and allows these extortions to be perpetuated on law-abiding citizen. Why are the police impotent? Where are the Prime Minister, Minister of National Security, and the members of Parliament? Why are they not outraged? How can they just utter meaningless platitudes while the country disintegrates into total lawlessness with a jungle mentality?

Why is the Government so weak, spineless and paralysed that it allows a small minority of thugs with guns to have such a stranglehold on its citizens?

These are questions that we patriotic Jamaicans are asking daily. We are appalled by the seeming apathy of the Government towards the continued lawlessness. I hope that the Government would give the police and the soldiers broader powers and resources to fight this 'cancer' that is destroying our beautiful, wonderful country. Mr. Editor, we want to come home.

I am, etc.,
