Legal backtalk - The first three Speakers of the House
published: Monday | February 9, 2004

TODAY IN the House begins its 'Did You Know' feature which will relive for you life in the Jamaican Legislature, dating back to 1945.

What was the name of the parliament building before it became Gordon House; was Gordon House constructed to house the Legislature and who was the first Speaker are just some of the questions we will answer for you in this section.

Today we name for you the first three Speakers of the House of Representatives who served between 1945 and 1954.

The first three Speakers represented the Jamaica Labour Party. They are:

Felix Gordon Veitch, who served for only six months from January 9, 1945 to June 20, 1945 when he was forced to step down because of ill health.

He was succeeded by Clement Aetcheson, who served from June 1945 to 1950. Clifford Campbell, who later became Jamaica's first native Governor-General, served as House Speaker from May 3,1950 to November 19,1954.
