Investing in education
published: Wednesday | February 11, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WHILE SERVING as an officer on the Majesty Of The Sea, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line (RCCL) God placed in me a vision to assist Ocho Rios Primary School. A fund-raising venture was launched and $200,000 was realised from this. From this sum gifts were bought for the school, $30,000 was handed over to Mr. H. Henlin who was the principal but is now retired, and J$150,000 was placed in an investment plan.

Let me take this opportunity to say thanks to and 'big up' the captain Arnolf Remo, officers Joseph Movery, Lester Lewis, Robert Salky, and the crew members of the Majesty Of The Sea who were on board November 1993 and helped ardently towards this venture.

I must update you on how the money in the investment plan is being monitored and spent. The principal would always remain in the account and the interest gained would be spent. To this point, achievements from this interest are:

1. A multi-purpose area suitable for outdoor functions and sports activities.

2. Four computers bought and handed over to the school computer lab.

3. $100,000 was handed over to the principal Mr. R. James on February 2, 2004 to assist in the building of a music room.

I am, etc.,

ALSIUS ELLIS

Great Pond,

Ocho Rios
