The season of love is here
published: Wednesday | February 11, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE SEASON to reflect love and to redefine love is upon us. The merchants, just through counting their Christmas profits, are ready to make our pocket see red, as we use our hard-earned cash to purchase gifts for those whom we say we love. For those of us men, who are in search of a role model to guide us, I recommend Joseph, the husband of Mary, the mother of Christ.

When Joseph discovered that his bride had became pregnant, not of his making, he decided to protect his wife from the scorn she was bound to experience in her community. He decided to stay with her.

He did so because his love was irreversible. Most men, if not all of us, would have been prepared to immediately abandon her. Not so, for Joseph, who had true love for Mary. His commitment demonstrates the meaning of the true love, the love a man should have for his woman. His love was unconditional. Joseph's love story should be our leading Valentine's story.

I am, etc.,

BERT SAMUELS
