published: Wednesday | February 11, 2004

SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine:

FOOD FOR the Poor will be building 500 housing units in the Ellerslie Pen community of Spanish Town by year end.

This was announced Monday during the handing over ceremony for 18 houses to eighteen families in Ellerslie Pen, by executive director Bradley Finzi Smith.

So far, he said, $1.2 million has been spent on the project.

The aim, the d.irector said, is to rebuild Ellerslie Pen from scratch, so as to give hope to the residents.

He said to date Food for the Poor has built over 300 houses in the area and, and that the 500 additional houses would cost $60 million.

"I am heartened to see Food for the Poor bringing love to the people through the provision of a vital part of life such as a house. I am sure it gives a sense of dignity to them," said Governor-General Sir Howard Cooke.
