THE EDITOR, Sir:I HAVE read carefully your editorial of February 13, 2004. You seem to think a stadium facility determines where the 2007 World Cup of Cricket will be held. As someone with a little knowledge of the basis on which awards of major sporting events are made may I make the following points:
All world sporting events are held in major cities (Olympics, World Cup Football, World Cup Cricket, Tennis Tournaments) etc.
Some of the major guiding factors in an award are: hospital services; policing services; fire services; potential for entertainment & amusement; potential for accommodation; utilities i.e. water, electricity & communication; transportation (external & internal); garbage collection.
In light of the above, could you please explain to the public of Jamaica how the Greenfield site in Trelawny could possibly meet the above conditions without major expenditure in addition to the cost of the new facility?.
My fear is that a Greenfield proposal to host the World Cup of Cricket will result in Jamaica not being awarded any games much less the semi-finals or finals.
I am, etc.,
