Double standards
published: Sunday | February 15, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE DOUBLE standards in this country never cease to amaze me. Everyday several wreckers can be seen prowling the streets of downtown Kingston waiting like hawks to swoop down on their prey.

One afternoon while returning from lunch I observed that one of these vehicles had stopped on King Street, in a place where another motorist's vehicle would have been unceremoniously scooped up and carted away. The driver had hopped out and left the vehicle, albeit with the engine still running and the female assistant seated in the passenger seat, to go and join the line to purchase his lottery ticket!

While I myself patronise such establishments and have no quarrel with the subject of his purchase, I object to his taking advantage of his position as a wrecker driver and allowing himself this privilege. I suppose that in his mind, buying the lottery is legitimate business while whatever reasons induce the rest of us to improperly park are not!

I am etc.,
