WESTERN BUREAU:

TRINIDAD AND Tobago's Simon Pierre and Jamaica's Sheryl Morgan took the 400m Invitational events at yesterday's 26th Milo Western Relays at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in Catherine Hall.

Pierre, competing for the IAAF High Performance Training Centre (HPTC) led the field to win his event in a creditable 47.10 seconds in his first race on artificial surface this season, beating teammate Curtis Riddell, who recorded a time of 48.19 and Rohan Phipps of It Dat Track Club (48.90).

Morgan, the former Holmwood Technical and Jamaica junior athlete who was running for G.C. Foster College, took over the women's event from about the 250m mark and powered home over the last 100m for a time of 54.07 seconds.

Morgan, who was running the 400m for the second time this season, was not satisfied with that time however, telling The Gleaner afterwards that she was hoping to go under 53 seconds.

It was a different story for second-placed Sherone Simpson who was quite happy with her time of 54.88, saying she had run 55 seconds last week at the Jamalco meet.

Former St. Elizabeth Technical runner Davta Prendergast of HPTC was third in 55.18.

Herbert Morrison's Lorne Campbell and Trishana McGowan of St. Andrew High created history as they became the first winners of the 400m hurdles at the event.

Campbell won the male event in 59.10 ahead of Munro College's Creighton Carnegie and Oliver Cargill

McGowan finished her race in 1:02.22 seconds ahead of teammate Arusha McKenzie and Cadienne Beckford of Holmwood Technical.

HIGHLY-RATED

Two highly-rated national athletes who were entered in the 100m, Christopher Williams and Brigitte Foster did not reach the start line. The Gleaner understands that the start of the women's race was too early for Foster while Williams did not show up.

Carl Barrett of G.C. Foster won the men's 100m in 10.50 seconds ahead of former champion Waddell Thompson of MoBay COMETS and Kenroy Alstead of UTech.

Shillone Calvert, formerly of Anchovy High and now running for Holmwood, won the girls' 100m in 12.11 seconds ahead of G.C. Foster's Jody Powell and Nicoy Roper of Albion Junior High.
