Carib Beer Cup - Guyana bowl out Windies B
published: Sunday | February 15, 2004

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP):

GUYANA TOOK first-innings points yesterday as the West Indies B team closed for 228 and then followed on to reach 50 for two in their second innings in the sixth-round Carib Beer Cup match.

Guyana, who amassed a mammoth 419 on Friday, bowled out the visitors thanks to a five-wicket haul by legspinner Mahendra Nagamootoo for 100.

FIRST VICTORY

Guyana's captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul asked the B team to bat again, as his team pushed for its first victory in the tournament.

Guyana's huge first innings total was based on 95 from Ramnaresh Sarwan, 94 from Travis Dowlin, 58 from Nagamootoo and 56 from all-rounder Domadar Daesrath.

The B team owed its moderate total to 45 from Jason Haynes and 43 from Danza Hyatt 43. They were undone by a combination of Guyana's spin-dominated attack and a rash of careless strokes by the top and middle order.

Umpires and match officials had extended the second session, after rain shortened the pre-lunch session to just 40 minutes.

  • Barbados trounce Leewards

    CHARLOTTE AMALIE,

    St. Thomas, CMC:

REPEAT CARIB Beer Cup champions Barbados completed a comprehensive innings and 48 runs victory over Leeward Islands well inside three days in their sixth round match of the series at Addelita Cancryn Junior High School yesterday.

The Leeward Islands, trailing Barbados by 271 runs on first innings, were bowled out for 223 in their second innings about five minutes past the scheduled tea break despite half-centuries from Tonito Willett and Sylvester Joseph to maintain the visitors' unblemished record in the Championship.

Willett hit seven fours in the top score of 63 from 163 balls in close to three hours of batting and Joseph smote nine fours in an even 50 from 85 balls in 2-1/2 hours to share 108 for the third wicket that raised hopes among the expectant crowd that Leewards might hold on.

  • Windward Islands beat Kenya

    KINGSTOWN,

    St. Vincent (AP):

THE WINDWARD Islands won their sixth-round Carib Beer Cup match against Kenya by 26 runs yesterday, having taken first innings points and limiting Kenya in their second innings to 178 for eight.

Kenya had scored 152 in their first innings, against the Windwards total of 357 for one declared.

    KENYANS WERE STRUGGLING

The Kenyans were struggling without Maurice Odumbe and Ravindhu Shah, both out with injury. Odumbe was struck on his left foot by Fernix Thomas on Thursday, while Shah injured his right hand while attempting to take a catch in the Windwards' innings.

The Windwards bowlers worked together to bring their team closer to the Carib Cup semi-finals with Thomas taking 8-27 in the first Kenyan innings and 2-44 in the second to be named man of the match.

Darren Sammy also took two for 29 in the second Kenyan innings, and Shane Shillingford with two for 20.

The Windward Islands now have 24 points in the tournament. To advance to the semi-finals they need at least first-innings points from the seventh-round match to be played this week against the young West Indies B team.
