Renewed hope for better days

THE EDITOR, Sir:
I MUST give my thanks to a band of professionals in a society that has grown cold, impersonal, uncaring and to some degree, even callous. Rarely these days, can one find individuals who pleasantly and courteously, provide a service, so to encounter in one place, a concentration of persons who live out daily the qualities of charity, mercy and love of neighbour, is singularly outstanding and deserving of the highest praise.
I was recently hospitalised in the Tony Thwaites Wing of the University Hospital where I witnessed and was the beneficiary of 'Total Quality Service' in action.
The management and staff of the Tony Thwaites Wing are proof positive that quality service can be achieved. In that institution I saw a crop of medical personnel and auxiliary staff who performed their jobs with proficiency without sacrificing the qualities of mercy, compassion, patience, tolerance, understanding and love. Every team on every shift at every level of the operation, demonstrated their commitment to doing all in their power to minimise the discomfort, disquiet and in some cases despair of their very ill patients. Their dedication to duty, their concern and gentle administration of service, dispensed with such grace and fervour brought balm to the sick while their cheerful and friendly greetings and words of encouragement and reassurance gave renewed hope for better days and wellness to those of us torn with pain and anxiety.
I am, etc.,
