Y.P. SEATON and Associates Construction Company came under heavy criticism from 80 per cent of the councillors who were present at the monthly meeting of the St. Elizabeth Parish Council for what they described as the contractor's poor performance in a number of road works in the parish.
Speaking at the meeting, which was held at the council's meeting room in Black River last Thursday, Councillor for the Mountainside division Anthony Montaque lashed out against the company for the poor work done on the Hill Top road in his division. He also said that the road, which is being repaired for more than five months, is yet to be completed.
"The next move is that I am prepared to meet with the Superintendent of Road and Works of the council and the technical people from the Local Government Ministry to discuss the situation. The contractor has done a poor job, the work is not done satisfactorily," Councillor Montaque told the meeting.
OFFICIALS TO VISIT HILLTOP
People's National Party (PNP) councillor for the Brompton division Dorothy Buchanan said she would be inviting the Mayor and the chairman of the agency Franklyn Witter, the chairman of the Infrastructure Development and Maintenance Committee and representatives from the Local Government Ministry to walk the Hill Top road to note the sloppy work that the contractor in question has allegedly done.
"We should not allow this kind of poor work from contractors to continue in St. Elizabeth. Most of these roads after repair are back to square one or worse than they were before the contract was signed. We need better quality work," she lamented.
This is not the first time Y.P. Seaton and Associates have been criticised by the St. Elizabeth Parish Council for its poor performance in road repair work in the parish.
COUNCILLORS NOT SATISFIED
Under the Parish Infrastructure Development Programme (PIDP), the company was given a significant number of contracts in St. Elizabeth which include the Hill Top road in Southwest St. Elizabeth and the Reading road in Northwest St. Elizabeth, among others. The contracts were signed at the level of the Ministry of the Local Government.
The councillors said that they are not satisfied and in this case the taxpayers are at the losing end.
Councillor Buchanan also cited a situation where the Brompton Lane road in her division was worse than it was before, less than two months after it was repaired by another contractor.
