Failing to solve the crime problem
published: Wednesday | February 18, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

MANY JAMAICANS have observed the cycle of failure on the part of our leaders to solve the crime problem even when given over a decade's worth of time. The same areas come in the news every year, West Kingston, Spanish Town, Denham Town, Matthews Lane and so forth.

They come with the same stories of peace treaties and politicians thanking dubious personalities for keeping the peace. Reports of ammunition finds by the police have the same locations. Grants Pen, Tivoli, Denham Town, Matthews Lane. By now it should be abundantly clear to every Jamaican that Jamaica does not manufacture guns, nor does it manufacture ammunition. We need only ask how the guns and ammunition came into the island.

And we also know the answer to that question. So where is the concentrated action at all our ports and airports and coastlines? How many more beautiful Jamaicans have to die because of our lack of resolve to put away gunmanship? Jamaica is not a continent. It could easily have the population of a city like Sarajevo or Memphis, USA.

The leaders whom we have put into power need to be questioned rigorously as to why Jamaicans must die in such numbers every year when the means exist to cut of the flow ammunition. Jamaicans need to think they deserve more and not less from their leaders.

I am, etc.,
