Hyacinth Bennett launches new action lobby group
published: Saturday | February 21, 2004

HYACINTH BENNETT, former president of the National Democratic Movement (NDM) is again on a charted course to effect change in Jamaica's political landscape with the unveiling of a new lobby group, Jamaicans For Action (JFA).

The group was launched at the Hydel Group of Schools in Ferry, St. Catherine on Thursday evening.

Mrs. Bennett said the group is here to "work for a social revolution, the emancipation of our people from mental slavery and the oppression, exploitation and manipulation of them by the old system, and the 'smadification' of the alienated, downtrodden majority as well as a better life for our youth and children..."

The JFA consists of a steering committee whose members include journalist Lloyd B. Smith, publisher of the Western Mirror; Dr. Wendel Abel, consultant psychiatrist; Barry Worman, former NDM candidate; Huntly Martin, attorney-at-law; and representatives of the religious fraternity and sixth form students from Hydel and Meadowbrook high schools.

Mrs. Bennett said her group will be placing special emphasis on education, and working more closely with the women of the country and community groups to instigate the change necessary to rescue Jamaica from the rampant political, economic and social ills that have infected the nation.

"Despite the pockets of achievement, since independence this nation has been wandering in a wilderness of utter political, economic, social and moral confusion," she said.

At the end of the three-hour meeting at minutes to 10:00 p.m., Mrs. Bennett expressed satisfaction with the turnout. She said the steering committee would be meeting in another two weeks to fully develop its strategic plan to effect the changes anticipated.
