'Zero tolerance on violent behaviour'
published: Saturday | February 21, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I READ with dismay the article in one of the daily newspapers titled 'Father encourages students to maul 'gay' son at Dunoon Tech'. The father of the young man should be ashamed of himself. It leaves me to wonder what type of father he could be, how could he allow such cruelty to be done to his son, and like a coward little rat, he ran away. I do hope the police will look thoroughly into this matter, as it is inciting violence against another person. I am almost certain that no one will be charged, as the police generally take a comical and nonchalant view to people who attack gays.

Violence is violence, it does not matter if it's against gay, heterosexual, Christian, black, white, poor person, etc. It's a form of discrimination, and must not be tolerated. How many of us would like to be attacked, simply because we are different and not deemed as 'normal'?

I do not condone the behaviour of male homosexuals. As long as they keep it in private and do not molest or harass me or anyone else, it is their private business. Sometimes we have to stand up for what is right.

The police it is said, 'gave the students a stern warning and send them away'. This can't be enough, people need to be educated that not because someone is different they must be discriminated against. The school must stand up and teach the students not be intolerant of others, the police need to take a stance of zero tolerance on violent behaviour, the communities need to take a stance, and be inclusive of all members of their community. The church needs to take a stance, as they continue to preach that we are all equal in God's sight. The country needs to take a stance, as violence in all manner is tearing us apart.

I am, etc.,

S. MILLER
