That MoU is truly amazing!
published: Saturday | February 21, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM truly amazed! What else can this Government do to cause the poor to be poorer? Is there no end to their thoughtlessness and selfishness?

It has been decided that we have to take a wage freeze for the next two years. Signed, sealed and delivered! Memorandum of Understanding and all! Whose understanding? No consideration as to the repercussions that such a decision must have. Will the prices of items in supermarkets and elsewhere be frozen as well?

Will the utility companies hold back on asking for increase? Oh no, because Cable and Wireless (C&W) has decided that since they are not making any money vie overseas calls, they need to find another way that will enable them to do so and our Govern-ment has given them the go ahead. No big deal! Just another 'nine-day' wonder you may say. Don't fool yourselves, not for a majority of us.

How can the OUR justifiably say that they deserve this increase and how can C&W say that they are not making any profits? Do we realise, gentle people, that we can easily pay $1,000 and this does not include any calls we may have made?

Has anyone really sat down and thought about the seriousness and consequences of actions taken by our Government in recent months? Does our Government realise that we are cultivating more 'white collar' thieves in our workplaces and probably sending some more persons into Bellevue, or worse yet, into the streets?

Why is it so hard for the 'powers that be' to have some compassion and empathy for the poor, and may I add, the middle-class as well? Be careful sirs and madams, whoever you are. The bottom of the bucket has long broken. Take another look at your decisions. Be very careful of what you have sown, as you will surely reap it.

I am, etc.,

A. PHILLPOTTS
