Councillor's bail extended
published: Saturday | February 21, 2004

By Roy Sanford, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

MILTON RUSSELL, People's National Party (PNP) Councillor for the Montego Bay West division, is to face the Montego Bay Petty Sessions Court on February 27 after he pleaded not guilty yesterday to the charges of using abusive language and resisting arrest.

During a brief appearance before the court Mr. Russell said he intended to get a lawyer to represent him and he has been in dialogue with attorney-at-law Albert Morgan. However, he said that Mr. Morgan could not have appeared in court yesterday since he was involved in another case before a Circuit Court in another parish.

Councillor Russell was subsequently told that he should settle his legal representation by the date assigned and his $5,000 bail was extended until that day.

Speaking with The Gleaner after the court appearance, Mr. Russell said he could have pleaded guilty to the charges and pay a small amount of money but he wanted to show the court that there was a 'plot' against him.

He said at no time during the incident for which he is facing charges did "I verbally abuse anyone with expletives or any such profanity, neither was there any physical confrontation with anyone including the police."

Mr. Russell was arrested and charged by the Montego Bay Police last Saturday night after he allegedly became involved in a brawl with the lawmen. The police were called to quell an argument between Mr. Russell and his ex-wife.
