Unfair taxes
published: Monday | February 23, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

REGRETFULLY LANDOWNERS have been put on notice for another increase in property tax. We are told that street lights, garbage disposal etc., are areas that extra money is needed to service.

However, I find it very hard to understand how the Government raises taxes without doing surveys to see the geographical area in which some lands are situated.

There are lands in areas where no roads to them exists, no water, no electricity. I write concerning the Great Bay Treasure Beach area. It is unfair to pay these heavy taxes when these holdings are not saleable because there are no roads to them. Ganja cultivators have taken them over destroying valuable trees and fencing.

Who is responsible for establishing these necessary amenities? Central Government or Parish Councils? I have never heard a Budget presentation where money is budgeted for this important purpose. Atten-tion Government and Oppo-sition, equity is needed here.

I am, etc.,

ARTIE A. PARCHMENT
