Bowl into the stadium discussion
published: Monday | February 23, 2004

THE EDITOR: Sir

CONTINUING THE discussion on venues of 2007, World Cup Cricket Series.

The discussion so far has shifted from Sabina Park or... to Sabina Park and Greenfield, Trelawny has been touted as the additional site.

I propose that Merlene Ottey has a more compelling case for locating the second (smaller) arena at Great Valley near the famous Tryall Golf and Country Club, Hanover.

Great Valley has all the attributes of Greenfield plus the mesmerising factor, the Jamaica Sprint Queen, Merlene Ottey. The Merlene Ottey High School at Great Valley has been named in her honour and this Merlene Ottey Stadium would achieve three immediate objectives. It would be a crowd attractor, and this includes thousands of foreigners and Jamaicans abroad who forever hail the name 'Merlene Ottey'. Indeed, it would attract far more visitors than its senior partner, Sabina Park.

Secondly, it would enhance the stature of the Merlene Ottey High School as it would be used as the 'hub' for sports in the west. Thirdly, to be associated with Merlene's name would be a source of pride and inspiration to all types of sporting participants who use the facilities.

I call upon the leadership in Hanover to bowl their ball into the stadium discussion and be amazed to see the spin it takes.

I am, etc.,

HERBERT L. BROWN
