Rating:
Yep! Good 2 Go is the fourth album from the DJ, born O'Neil Bryan, and is designed to make you move.
ELEPHANT MAN'S infectious lyrics and blazing beats defy any notions of keeping still. From the first track Pon De River Pon De Bank to the number 18 track Blase, both named after popular Jamaican dances, there is non-stop 'bouncing'.
They do not call the deejay the 'Energy god' for nothing. The unexpected retro rocksteady feel of the number 19 track Who You Think You Is produced by Lloyd 'King Jammy' James adds a nice touch to the album and is one of the few songs with some real lyrical substance. However, if this song were placed anywhere else on the album it would have interrupted the flow of the energy throughout. At this point, too, after all that dancing it provides a nice mellow effect.
The acoustic sound of Mexican Girl furthers this solemn mood and carries the album to an appropriate conclusion. The production is good and Elephant Man's comical lisp and flow prove an endearing combination that delivers 1000 volts.
In spite of these two tracks the album is a basic dancehall fare. There is misogyny ('Bad Man'), sadism ('All Out'), and homophobia ('Nah Gwan A Jamaica'). With songs such as C... up Your Bumper (featuring Sasha and Big Tigger) and Bun Fi Bun, do not expect the songs on this album to push the lyrical envelope or make any profound philosophical statements. Just dance!
LYRICAL CONTENT
There are marvellously meaningless mutterings such as Nuh mek yuh fren tek bus, signal di plane'and Kid Kurupt trim lef him head up a di barber. The album's lyrical content is like popcorn, it is enjoyable but it provides no vitamins or minerals, no nutrients, just empty calories.
Maybe you don't need to pay attention to lyrics when you are dancing up a storm. But Elephant has no pretension of making a lyrically profound album. On the first track of the album he makes his focus clear. "I'm just doing this for the kids and me and the fans all agree...we just keeping it bouncing and letting the fans enjoy themselves. It's time to party."
