Haiti, no surprise
published: Wednesday | February 25, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE FIGHTING and violence taking place in Haiti today is because of an uncaring society, nothing new to that country! My mother was born there in 1901 and she, as well as her brothers and sister, lived there with her parents until she went to school in England at the age of eight.

My grandfather was in business there, and interestingly, he was the first agent for Shell Oil in this hemisphere.

Their home was situated in downtown Port-Au-Prince, located between the palace and the fort.

Among my mother's earliest recollections, was of the whole family lying face down on the floor of their home, holding pillows over their heads as cannon and gunfire roared overhead in both directions.

I am, etc.,
