Jamaica's dilemma

THE EDITOR, Sir:
I TOO was appalled to read the news story of the 'mauling' of an 11th grader at Dunoon Tech by fellow students. The boy was beaten, almost to death, at the urging of his own father, who suspected he might be homosexual. The young mob of unruly students, both boys and girls, who were joined by outsiders, also turned on the police who later showed up, the police could only offer a stern scolding to the perpetrators and sent them along their merry way.
Is this the direction Jamaican society is heading? Sadly, I haven't heard one of our leaders denouncing this inhumane act!
I use this medium to reach out to this young man, a victim of an uncaring society, someone who will be traumatised for life. Are we regressing in Jamaica? As someone with an interest in global human rights issues and Amnesty International, I am particularly saddened.
We reap what we sow, and what goes around, often comes around. There is no hope for an uncaring society.
I am, etc.,
