Three more die by gun
published: Thursday | February 26, 2004

By Glenroy Sinclair and Tyrone Reid, Staff Reporters

THREE MORE persons, including a policeman and a prominent member of the entertainment industry, were shot and killed in separate incidents across the island on Tuesday night.

The latest deaths have pushed the country's murder toll to over 165 in under two months.

Dead are Corporal Fearon Burke, a 20-year veteran of the Island Special Constabulary Force (ISCF); Paul Tyrell, tour manager of Shocking Vibes Promotions, and Marcello Whyte, 29, of Craig Town, south St. Andrew.

SECOND POLICEMAN

Corporal Burke, who is the second policeman to be killed in less than a week, died at a bar on Sefton Road. Allegations are that about 10:30 on Tuesday night, four men entered the bar, sat for a while observing the patrons, before one brandished a gun.

During a brief conversation with the robbers, Corporal Burke denied being a member of the police force. But when the gunmen searched his vehicle and found his identification badge, they did not spare his life. They shot him several times and the officer died on the spot. His killers took his licensed firearm.

According to the police, Tyrell, 32, was driving his Toyota Rav 4 along Springvale Avenue close to Constant Spring Road when he was attacked by a lone gunman, who shot him several times.

Whyte, of a Craig Town address, was shot and killed by unknown assailants in the community about 9:25 p.m. on Tuesday. He was reportedly approached by men who opened fire, hitting him. He died on the spot.
