Burke to run for PNP presidency
published: Thursday | February 26, 2004

PAUL BURKE, former chairman of the People's National Party's (PNP) Region Three, will this Sunday officially announce his intentions to run for president of the PNP, at a function at the Hilton Kingston Hotel, New Kingston.

Mr. Burke, who recently launched Region Seven, and members of his campaign secretariat held a press briefing yesterday at the Knutsford Court Hotel, New Kingston, to announce the launch of his campaign, dubbed 'The Campaign for Transformation'.

FIRST OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

'This is my first official announcement to the wider party that I intend to contest the position of president of the People's National Party, and only after our current president, Comrade P.J. Patterson, retires from that position. I will not be challenging Comrade Patterson," Burke said in a document outlining his agenda.

Mr. Burke has already communicated his intentions to run for president to Mr. Patterson, via a confidential letter that was sent to him on December 29, 2003.

Copies of the letter were also sent to Burchell Whiteman, general-secretary, Portia Simpson Miller and Peter Phillips, vice-presidents and Donald Buchanan, whom he describes as a "close political colleague."

The campaign document stresses that Region Seven will not be involved directly or indirectly in any campaign on his behalf or anyone else's.

"It will remain as established, a resource group of the People's National Party and a catalyst for transformation politics and community empowerment," the document said.
