THE EDITOR, Sir:
SURELY WESTMORELAND could do without typhoid, this water-borne disease! Simple methods of geographic placement of homes, or installation of sanitary systems, can alleviate this scourge.
Coupled with typhoid, is the source protection of valuable ground water sources. Case in point, Roaring River. Both the locals and the Government are to blame, and both groups must act. The Government is primarily responsible for the protection of water sources, and must proceed with vigour and haste to procure adequate housing with sanitary services for all displaced citizens of Roaring River.
As an alternative, albeit expensive way forward, the Government could install a sanitary sewer system and treatment for collected wastes.
The citizens of Roaring River must be made aware of the impact of just living in proximity to the source of drinking water for so many of their countrymen.
On another matter of concern of the assassination of a senior police officer in Kingston, this is an abomination. What does this say about the safety of ordinary citizens? Jamaicans should react with rage at this heinous act, it could happen to them. The population must begin to eliminate the gunmen. It is the duty of citizens to use whatever information they can get to put such criminals in jail.
I am, etc.,
