Canadian police chief returns
published: Thursday | February 26, 2004

A YEAR after he visited some of Kingston's dangerous inner-city communities, Toronto's police chief Julian Fantino is expected to make a return trip to the island tomorrow.

This time around he will be assisting with the implementation of programmes to combat the spate of crime.

A spokesperson at the Canadian High Commission confirmed yesterday that Chief Fantino will arrive in the island tomorrow on a short trip. He will be the guest speaker at a business luncheon next week. He will also be the special guest at the 2003/2004 LASCO Top Cop award ceremony scheduled for March 3.

Mr. Fantino, during his last visit, had proposed to assist the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), in its fight to reduce crime across the island. At that time he described his mission as an opportunity to share information with members of the local police force.

Following lengthy discussions between Mr. Fantino and Police Commissioner Francis Forbes, a Memorandum of Understanding was developed between the JCF and their Toronto counterparts, providing a legal framework for the sharing of intelligence and information in a number of areas, as well as issues relating to border control.
