Haitians deserve a chance

THE EDITOR, Sir:I WOULD like to use this medium to respond to a letter entitled 'Deport the Haitians' published in the Thursday Gleaner dated February 26, 2004.
One Ulrich May proceeded to denigrate the Haitian refugees arriving on our shores. This individual illustrated a very cruel and bigoted opinion, and obviously lacked any form of human compassion for these people. So what if the United States turns back loads of Haitians from her shores? Does that mean we should do the same?
Fortunately, I can assure you that all Jamaicans are not as callous as you are. We do what we can to help. It is all well for you to write selfish comments from your ivory tower in the United States. Do not treat the plight of the Haitians with such contempt. Remember, 'Today a fi mi, tomorrow a fi yuh.'
I am, etc.,
