Carnival fever heats up
published: Monday | March 1, 2004

By Teino Evans, Staff Reporter

NOT EVEN a full day of rainfall prevented patrons from turning out in their numbers on Friday night to the Mas Camp Village, Oxford Road, where the 'Smirnoff Rio Carnival' was held.

Usually after extensive rainfall during the day not many persons bother to leave their homes for entertainment events, however, the opposite happened at the Mas Camp.

At 11:30 p.m. the venue had already started to heat up as patrons were put in the mood with complimentary Smirnoff Ice drinks on their entry to the venue.

Then there was the outstanding spinning of Alrick and Boyd and DJ Kurt Riley on the turntables. Patrons were held captive by their musical selections of soca/calypso music, and special 'mixes' of dancehall songs, like Sizzla's Can't Keep A Good Man Down on a soca rhythm. There were also some guest appearances by selectors from outside of Jamaica, among them, DJ Platiffe from Brazil, DJ Siyanada from South Africa and DJ Darryl from Trinidad.

Needless to say, the night was about getting in front of or behind someone and gyrating to the ground, but other attractions had patron's undivided attention.

There were the 'Fire Dancers' as they called themselves, who spat fire from their mouths while they danced in the middle of Mas Camp, and there were revellers in costumes who were on a stage where they danced and gyrated for the pleasure of the crowd.

The highlight of the night however came when MC Abe Baccharat called patrons in closer to the stage for a colourful and attractive showpiece by the Paulo Gualano Samba Group from Brazil along with a showcasing of Rio carnival costumes and dance moves.

DANCE

Patrons listened keenly to the Samba drum and pressed closer to the stage for an eyefull when some beautiful women took to the stage to give them a peek of what costumes looked like at the Rio Carnival in Brazil. As they did the dance moves to accompany their fashion some patrons were even invited on-stage for brief dance lessons. Some of the patrons managed to keep up with their instructors while others just couldn't match what their Brazilian revellers demonstrated.

After this segment patrons were put in overdrive as DJ Kurt Riley took them on an escapade. During the fun and excitement the patrons started a soca train which at least what ended up looking like a
number of derailed trains.

Patrons no doubt enjoyed themselves at Smirnoff Rio Carnival and even the elderly that turned out for a piece of the action must have left the venue feeling rejuvenated.
